5th October 2026 walk near Hascombe with Richard and Frances Morris

Hascombe – around the White Horse October 5th 2026
Leader: RM Walkers: FB, JE, SE, RD, ME, JE, PG, LG, AP, AS, MC, MD, DN
Summary: 4.7 miles, starting from Hascombe White Horse. Parking opposite the pub.

A ridge walk,
mostly level, with a short, stiff climb onto the ridge and another shorter climb over Hascombe Hill. No stiles. Mostly dry underfoot but there are a few muddy stretches after rain or in winter. There is no road walking, other than crossing the B2130 from the car park and the length of Church Road. The ridge offers a number of spectacular views in various directions, including two points where the path
traverses saddles, giving views on both sides. Lunch at the White Horse.

Route: Walk the length of Church Road, turning left at the end then following the track parallel to the B2130 and ignoring several paths on the left. Eventually the path bends away from the road, passing Cricket’s Hill on the right and Langhurst Farm on the left. After a steep climb through woods, the path meets the Greensand Way (GW) at the top of the ridge. Turn right on the GW, for about ¼ mile, continuing straight on where the GW bears right. In a little under ½ mile the path crosses the first saddle, with views west towards Hascombe and east towards Pitch and Holmbury Hills. At the crossroad shortly afterwards (ignoring the path on the left that heads down the valley), continue straight on a path that soon bears left (east) towards Nore Hanger. Bear left at the fork in the woods, as this path stays close to the edge of the ridge with tantalising views through the trees. Ignoring a
path on the left that drops steeply, turn sharp right (south) onto Nore Hanger. In about ¼ mile, the path crosses a second saddle with views east and west. There is a grassy bank and a fallen tree here, making a suitable coffee stop, although the views are only visible when standing. Continue to the T junction, turning right (west) then left uphill through the woods onto Hascombe Hill.

[At this point,
instead of turning left, it is possible to continue straight on (west) towards Hascombe Place Farm, the track eventually turning into Nore Lane and leading back to the pub.]

If continuing the walk round Hascombe Hill, follow the path SE along the edge of the ridge, with occasional views through the trees across the Weald towards Dunsfold Airfield and the South Downs in the far distance. Eventually, the path curves round the Iron Age fort with impressively steep drops on the left. Follow the path northwards and gently downhill through the woods, with westerly views on
the left towards the Hurtwood on the other side of the B2130. After a little over ½ mile, the path reaches Nore Lane, where a left turn leads to the White Horse within a few yards.
